So, having purchased the worlds shittiest iroc this summer, its now at a point where daily driving is eminently possible(rust cracks in floors “fixed”, brake system overhauled, all fluids but trans changed, no oil leaks), the question of suspension now needs to be addressed. I stubbornly insist on both using it as a truck replacement (see photo) and intend to put snows on and drive as much as possible this winter(i do have a second car if this turns out to be a death wish)

However, as can clearly be seen, its re ar suspension is somewhat unhappy. This is just loaded with cargo, with people in the back and cargo it very nearly rides on the bump stops. Currently trying to decide which path i wish to take in addressing it before it becomes too cold to wrench(no garage, living in southern quebec). The no cost spared option is to get new springs, new shocks, and airbags to go with said springs. Total would be about 300 cad. Other options are only new shock and springs(120ish), or just airbags(do the math). As a university student, new(good) winters are already a sizeable purchase, so id prefer to avoid the all out option. New shocks and springs would likely fix static sag issues( it noticeably drops while filling gas tank) but im still somewhat worried about the sag under load. Opposite that, we have airbags, which wont raise the static sag, but will almost certainly eliminate sag under load if planned for. Looked into air shocks as the killer solution, but 3rd gen f-body shock mounts are just sheet metal and so though i can purchase them, i have some worries about punching out said mounts if i hit a bump fully loaded. Fairly new here, but oppos advice would certainly be welcomed

Get air bags that fit inside the springs. Air Lift 1000. I have them on my El Camino and they work great at. 5 psi normally and then 15psi if I am carry heavy things. They will level 1000 pounds of load.

I love it!

I put a set of air bags in the coils of my Roadmaster wagon, which had bigly sagged. They made a huge difference, static and loaded. It was a great cheap fix, and I'd do it again.

Also, the air lift bags will lift raise your rear end a bit - 1/2" - 3/4".

If I were on a budget, and was definitely going to be carrying a load, I would start with the bags, then the shocks then the springs.

A coworker and friend of mine told me he upgraded to springs to something stiffer when he owned one back in the day. Said it would bottom out when new with people in the back.

Also, definitely change the rear shocks if they haven’t been in a while...

You just need shocks and springs. When the springs are worn, they sag. That’s all.

KYB Gas-A-Just shocks are good and the price isn’t too bad, either.
